Nonprofit Software

Free software - Free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation, is software which can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed without restriction. Freedom from such restrictions is central to the concept of "free software", such that the opposite of free software is proprietary software, and not software which is sold for profit, such as commercial software.

Utility software - Utility software (also known as software utilities, service program, service routine, tool, or utility routine) is a type of computer software that is designed to help manage and tune the computer hardware, operating system or application software and perform a single task or a small range of tasks; as opposed to application software which tend to be software suites. Utility software has long been integrated into most major operating systems.

Software copyright - Software copyright, the relatively recent extension of copyright law to software, has allowed a market for proprietary software to flourish for some time. Some proponents of free software use software copyrights in order to ensure that the software they write will remain free.

Debian Free Software Guidelines - The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) are a set of guidelines that the Debian Project uses to determine whether a software license is free software license, which in turn is used to determine whether a piece of software can be included in the main, free software distribution of Debian. Debian had by 2003 collected over seven and a half thousand software packages compliant with the above guidelines.
